¡Participamos en el MARTECH 2025!

30-05-2025

MARTECH is a leading international forum in the field of marine technology, established since 2008 as a key space for sharing scientific and technological advances. Its main goal is to exchange knowledge and perspectives on cutting-edge research across multiple areas related to marine technologies. This year, on May 28 and 29, Oarsoaldea became the epicenter of marine innovation with the celebration of MARTECH 2025 in Pasaia, Gipuzkoa. The event, promoted by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and organized this edition by AZTI, brought together top experts to discuss the future of marine technology.

During two intense days, cutting-edge developments were presented in underwater robotics, sensors, maritime communications, data interoperability, artificial intelligence, and digital twins, with applications in strategic sectors such as sustainable fishing, marine environment monitoring, and coastal tracking in the face of climate change.

On this occasion, our research group participated with two contributions:

The group leader, Jesús García Lafuente, presented the poster titled “PLOSEG: Underwater Observation Platform of the Strait of Gibraltar,” where he introduced an innovative monitoring platform developed by GOFIMA researchers within the ESMER4 project (Complementary R&D Plan in Marine Sciences, ThinkInAzul Andalucía). The proposal, designed to be deployed on the seabed, attracted significant interest among attendees for its innovative approach compared to traditional observation architectures.

On the other hand, researcher Irene Nadal Arizo presented the oral communication “A predictive numerical tool for invasive species monitoring and management: Rugulopteryx okamurae as a case study” in session 4.2, dedicated to “Data to products and services, AI & digital twins.” In her presentation, she addressed the expansion of the invasive alga Rugulopteryx okamurae, present on Mediterranean coasts since its introduction in the Strait of Gibraltar in 2015, focusing on how physical knowledge, numerical modeling, and technological tools can contribute to improved monitoring and management of this species along the coast.
